Letter to the Editor: From Victor Rios re. Marco Island Veterans’ Park

Lettertoeditor

Several months ago, the issue of Veterans Park came to the forefront when plans were put forward by MI City Manager and others, to build a multipurpose building in Veterans’ Park with the guise that there would be a facility for Veterans. Veterans were the “Hook” to get $2.5 million from the Florida legislators, then requiring the City to borrow another $5 million and further increasing the city debt. This fell apart quickly after every Veteran organization in the island objected to having their name associated with a structure that was going to do very little for Veterans. At the time, I wrote a Guest Commentary objecting to the process. There ... Read More »

Planning the Future of Veterans Park

Members of the community attend a meeting on the future of Veterans Park. Submitted Photos

By Coastal Breeze News Staff A meeting open to the public on the topic of further development of Veterans Community Park was held at Mackle Park on April 19th. The original venue at Iberiabank was cancelled, and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) felt it prudent to move the meeting to Mackle Park rather than cancel it. Gathering feedback from the public on this topic has been a top mission of PRAC. Approximately 75 people attended. PRAC Chair Jerry Swiacki led the meeting, starting with a review of the purchase of the Glon property and its course on improvements ... Read More »

ROMEOs Do Lunch

By Maggie Gust If you’re out for lunch on any Tuesday here on Marco and see eight or so men gathered together, chances are they are ROMEOs. Wherefore art thou, ROMEOs? It is the acronym for Retired Old Men Eating Out, coined by Fred Stavola, the group’s social engineer. Every four months, Fred determines the restaurant schedule for the lunch bunch and distributes it to the members. Their lunch spots are rotated, with no place being repeated consecutively within that four-month cycle. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Most of the men met initially through the Marco Men’s ... Read More »

How Do You Know That?

SUBMITTED PHOTO

ALL THAT GLITTERS Richard Alan harborgoldsmith@comcast.net Questions, questions, always with the questions! And in case some of you out there don’t know it, I happen to be a goldsmith and jeweler to the stars. (This includes the sun, moon and deep blue seas.) So naturally I‘m asked a lot of questions on the subject of gold, jewelry, diamonds and precious gemstones, even subjects that I haven’t the slightest clue to the answer. For instance, “When do you think the price of gold will go up again?” If I knew the answer to that question I would be ruler of the ... Read More »

I recently read Dawn Kuhn’s editorial on the addition of a building for Veterans to meet and gather at the beautiful Veteran’s Park. I also feel that there are plenty of places for our wonderful Veterans to meet on the Island.  The gathering place that has been made so beautiful at Veterans Park should be preserved as it currently is.  It seems like Marco Island wants to build something on every last piece of land on the Island.   We now see these huge, right up to the lot line, homes being built.  The quaintness of Marco has come and gone.   ... I just read with great interest the proposed building for the Veterans Community Service Center. When the citizens of Marco Island voted to spend $11 million for the Glon property we were given the opportunity to view different proposals for the new park. It wasn’t voted on to be a “Veteran’s” park but a park for the citizens of Marco Island. There was to be peripheral parking, not a huge parking lot in the middle of the property, lots of shade trees, a play ground for the children, most importantly an outdoor amphitheater similar to the one in Cambier Park ... Veterans and Community Support Essential for Proposed Veterans Community Park Building

DSCN1538

By Don Manley Marco Island City Manager Roger Hernstadt discussed the facts surrounding the community building the city is considering erecting at Veterans Community Park with members of American Legion Post 404 on Tuesday afternoon at the organization’s monthly meeting. The topic generated controversy recently thanks to reports that the name “veterans” had been attached to the building’s name as part of the city’s effort to have $2.5 million in funding for the proposed project included when Florida’s legislature establishes its fiscal 2016 budget. Some Marco military veterans are concerned that community members may have the false impression that they ... Read More »

Dear Councilors and Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, The purpose of this letter is to inform you that I am not in favor of the proposed building at Veterans’ Park. When the people of Marco voted on a referendum to buy the property I believe most of us were envisioning a place to enjoy with various venues. For example, a band shell, a walking path on the water’s edge and a performing arts, center.   Many designs were bantered about and considered by P&R. I understand the price tag on those desired plans is unaffordable at this time. ... Read More »

Governor Vetoes Veterans Community Service Center

VETO

By Coastal Breeze News Staff A lobbyist hired by the City of Marco Island last year has been hard at work seeking funding for various projects earmarked by the city. Among the projects on the list was a new multi-purpose building at Veterans Park dubbed the Veterans Community Service Center. “Unfortunately, we learned that despite our successful efforts to encourage the Collier County Delegation to the State of Florida the legislature to include $2.5 million to match city funding for the veterans community park service center in the state budget submitted to the governor – and the legislature supported and included ... Design, Use of Mackle Park Community Center Discussed

CityOfMarco-feature

By Noelle H. Lowery noelle@coastalbreezenews.com It was supposed to be a discussion about the size and design of the proposed new Mackle Park Community Center. As happens often times when the subject of Mackle Park comes up, though, the joint workshop between the Marco Island City Council and its Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) — held Tuesday, Jan. 20 — quickly devolved into a discussion about projected programming numbers, competition with private community and business organizations, and whether or not the sole focus of this project should even be Mackle Park. The workshop was a culmination of more than ... Read More »

“And in the ring we have…”

A18-CBN-11-14-14-1

By Coastal Breeze News Staff Marco Island has been home to an international boxing show since 2011 thanks to Marco Island policeman Richie Stoltenborg. Originally held in a tent at Veterans Park, it has grown in popularity, and it is now held at the Marco Island Marriott. Each year, Team New Jersey battles Team Ireland for the Championship belt. “The criteria to making one of these teams that travels internationally is staying out of trouble, staying off the streets, stay in school and in the gym,” says Richie. “Amateur boxing builds character, self-esteem and self-confidence. Hopefully, next year we will ... Read More »

City Council Approves Lobbyist

CityOfMarco-feature

By Noelle H. Lowery noelle@coastalbreezenews.com During the 2014 legislative session, Florida lawmakers had a $1.2 billion budget surplus to dole out to pet projects in their districts. Marco Island City Manager Roger Hernstadt and the City Council are betting this was not an anomaly. “This year, the Legislature had extra money and went on a buying spree,” explained Hernstatd. “(Marco Island) was not in the game. I don’t know how long this environment will last, but I felt it was worth the council’s consideration to see if they want to get into the game.” To that end, councilors voted 5-1 ... Read More »

Veterans Park Battles Fire Ants

A4_CBN_12-27SoFireAnt5e

By Noelle H. Lowery noelle@coastalbreezenews.com Few insects make their presence known like fire ants. A person may not feel them crawling up his or her leg, but the telltale painful burning sting certainly cannot be mistaken. This is a familiar sensation for some who have visited Marco Island’s Veterans Park recently. Whether for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration, Movie Night in the Park or the Farmer’s Market, some people have had a number of stinger-to-skin encounters with the pesky little critters. According to Marco Island Public Works Director Tim Pinter, whose department is in charge of dispatching the ants, ... Read More »

Upgrades to Veterans Park

CBN_A19-4

By Coastal Breeze News Staff The journey to a completed Veterans’ Park has been seven years in the making so far, from the initial proposal by the local VFW Post to completion of the first phase: a series of flags, benches and paving stones. An ambitious plan for a new Veterans’ Memorial Fountain and Flag Plaza for Veteran’s Park got the green light at the December 20 city council meeting. Phase II of the Veterans’ Park Memorial will include the installation of a fountain and flag plaza. The committee’s goal is to dedicate these enhancements next Veteran’s Day; November 11, ...
