Blessing of the Fleet

Everglades City crabbers are ready for 2014 season.

By Pat Newman Everglades City’s crab fleet was blessed by pastors and baptized in rainwater Saturday, Sept. 27, as families gathered to celebrate the start of another stone crab season. The event was held on the grounds of the historic Rod and Gun Club on the Barron River. Sponsored by members of the Everglades Society for Historic Preservation, the blessing of the boats was initiated six years ago by Tod Dahlke and local crabbers, according to the society’s president Marya Repko. Used traps are pulled and stacked. SUBMITTED PHOTOS

GOODLAND LIFE Melinda Gray melinbrya3@yahoo.com The smell of crab traps in the open air — after months of being underwater — is a tell-tale sign of the end of stone crab season in Southwest Florida. “It’s quite pungent over there,” said Pat Kirk, the matriarch of the Kirk family and owner of Kirk’s Fish Company. Hope everybody had a peaceful holiday and you’re still sticking to your resolutions. 2013 is here whether ya like it or not, and with it comes tourist season (honk!), stone crab season (mmmm) and “playing music” season (yeeeaow!). This tweek, Music Notes will be visiting one of Gator Nate’s oldest haunts. The legendary Little Bar sits smack dab in the middle of downtown Goodland as it has for, well, longer than I’ve been around at least. Some say size matters, but when it comes to quaint, cozy, and sometimes wildly crazy local ... Read More »

Patricia Huff Excitement comes to Everglades City when stone crab season opens every year on October 15! Last Sunday we started the celebration with the 3rd annual “Blessing of the Fleet.” Local fishermen and their families arrived at the Rod & Gun Club on their crab boats as visitors and residents welcomed them with applause and local children lined the dock with rose petals. Pastor John Gilmore from Copeland Baptist Mission, Pastor Morris Dantin from Chokoloskee Church of God, and Pastor Jim Fross from the Everglades Baptist Church blessed each vessel, praying for their safety. Earlier in the afternoon there ... Read More »
