Flippin’ Flapjacks for Fire Foundation

By Coastal Breeze News Staff The Marco Island Fire Rescue Foundation (MIFRF) held its annual Pancake Breakfast at the Fire Station for a hungry crowd. The eggs, sausage, and pancake breakfast is a popular treat for breakfast lovers. “Guest” pancake flippers included Fire Chief Mike Murphy, City Manager Roger Hernstadt and Steve Stefanides. Adults enjoyed an opportunity to support their local fire department, to socialize and share a meal with friends. Kids loved the pancakes (especially when the Chief added chocolate chips, or worked some Mickey Mouse pancake magic.) Children, no matter how old, were welcome to see the fire ... Read More »

By Don Manley The service and sacrifice of America’s military men and women was once again commemorated at the Christmas Island Style Holiday Salute to Veterans. Held recently at Rose History Auditorium, the annual affair blended solemn remembrance and patriotic and holiday songs with a presentation on a relatively new program, Collier County Honor Flight. The evening coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Bulge and it ended with a special announcement honoring WWII veteran Owen Carr, of Marco Island. Among the speakers were Vietnam veterans Steve Stefanides, chairman of Christmas Island Style, and Lee Rubenstein, commander of ... Read More »

Let it SNOW!

A new Christmas Island Style tradition in the making is happening on Saturday, December 15 at Veteran’s Community Park. ‘Snowmania’ is set to bring 40 tons of snow to the park, along with games, slides and Santa, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. “We wanted to do something special for kids,” explains Steve Stefanides, the chairperson behind Christmas Island Style. The organization has been saving up for about five or six years. “It costs about $7,000: you’re bringing tractor trailers and chunks of ice to make the snow.” Christmas Island Style has planned for three piles of snow divided between ... Christmas Island Style

Submitted First, it was Thanksgiving Day. All the wonderful foods, desserts and the tradition of watching football consumed us over the holiday weekend. Then we would found islanders scurrying around to merchants on the island and over the bridge, in search of that elusive great deal on Black Friday, as the unofficial first day of holiday shopping season began. For many Marco Islanders and their youngsters, it was Friday night at the Shops of Marco that would have them focusing on the aerial delivery of Santa for his first official visit to Marco Island this year, kicking off the 2012 ... On the road again

By Coastal Breeze News Staff Marco Island’s “paradise pedaler,” Steve Zandy, is back to his regular cycling routine thanks to the help of the local community. Zandy, known around town for his big heart and custom-built bicycle, lost his sense of freedom when his bicycle was stolen right out of his driveway in mid-June. Members of the Marco community quickly banded together to raise funds to purchase a new bike for Zandy. “It is a real tribute to the island and the generosity of this community,” stated Steve Stefanides of Christmas Island Style, who was originally contacted to help in ... By Coastal Breeze News Staff Marco Island resident, Steve Zandy, is getting a new bike. After his custom-made, three-wheeled bicycle went missing sometime between Sunday evening of June 17 and early Monday morning, June 18, an outpouring of donations from the community has made it possible to build Steve a new bike. Upon hearing the news of the stolen bicycle, Karen Nettles of Marco Island, contacted Steve Stefanides of Christmas Island Style and Tiffany Holmuth of Mutual of Omaha Bank. Together, they set up a donation fund where individuals could drop off checks in Steve’s name at Mutual of Omaha ... Read More »

Christmas Island Style 2011 wrap-up

By Monte Lazarus  Bengoshi@comcast.net  Santa’s back with the missus and the elves; Christmas 2011 is over. Marco Island’s own Christmas Island Style wrapped up on January 17th with a festive awards ceremony. Unlike Hollywood, there were no red carpets, no speeches thanking agents, families and producers. It was simply down-home thanks and recognition of the judges’ selections as best in all the classes and categories. About 80 attendees were at the Historical Society’s Rose Hall to enjoy some food and libations before distribution of the awards. Steve Stefanides served as emcee for the Mutual of Omaha sponsored event. Steve, or ... Read More »

Parading the streets of Marco

By Coastal Breeze News Staff With great anticipation and excitement, Marco Island’s 24th Annual Christmas Island Style Street Parade was welcomed by cheering, shouting crowds. The parade is the pinnacle event after weeks of planned activities geared towards celebrating Christmas in proper island- style. According to Steve Stefanides, “I think we had more in attendance this year than ever before.” The weather certainly cooperated this year. Cars and trucks started lining up along the parade route early in the morning. While others hauled out chairs and ropes to stake out their prime viewing area. Not only were those walking the ... Kiwanis Club of Marco Island “Toys for Kids” drive

Submitted Once again, the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island has begun their annual toy drive for the children of our area. In lieu of donating toys, the club is requesting monetary donations. By doing so, it allows the club members along with the Lely Key Club to shop for appropriate toys for children in the area. K-Mart on Tamiami Trail in Naples has generously offered to open their doors to our “Santa’s helpers” on Sunday, December 18, 2011. In the past the discounts and assistance from K-Mart provided a wonderful selection of quality toys for the students. The gifts will ... Read More »

Christmas Island Style means giving and good times

By Danielle Dodder  Steve Stefanides really doesn’t want you to give him credit for pulling together the month-long series of holiday events that is Christmas Island Style. He declined a photo for this piece and credits the generosity of event sponsors before his own work. (Well, we did ask him to sport a holiday sweater, so the photo ducking is understandable.) However, when many a monument to ego-building masquerades as a good deed, this modesty is refreshing. In fact, Marco’s surrogate Santa does much more than coordinate a tree lighting, and Christmas Island Style is more than a good time. ... Read More »
