Many thanks to all who came out on Saturday to give the Marco Island Center for the Arts its wonderful new look. Dave Rice who chaired and brought this project to fruition is to be congratulated. Florida Paint Center Inc. donated much of the paint. Publix saw that innumerable workers were never hungry. Marco Island’s Big Flag Fly’s Again

  At the City Council meeting today, following Councils approval of Phase II construction plans to enhance Veteran’s Park, Big Flag Committee Chairman, Dave Rice announced to the audience that in honor of the veteran’s at today’s meeting that the Big Flag at the Jolley Bridge is again flying. A vehicle severely damaged the pole, requiring the purchase of a new and improved flag pole.  Stated Rice, “I had a wish for the Holiday Season that the flag would fly for Christmas and my wish came true. Marco Island Citizen of the Year Dave Rice Recognized by Governor Rick Scott and United States Senator Bill Nelson.

Marco Island’s 2012 Citizen of the Year, Dave Rice, received congratulatory letters from Governor Rick Scott and United States Senator Bill Nelson. Governor Scott stated “Your efforts are helping make Florida the greatest place to live, work and play.  The work you are doing is to be commended”. United States Senator Bill Nelson commented “I am happy that you are being recognized and rewarded for your many years of commitment and dedication to so many worthwhile projects in and for the Marco Island Community”. Update of the Vehicle Accident Damaging the Big Flag Pole

On Wednesday, November 7, the Collier Boulevard median, housing the Big Flag Pole, lighting fixtures and the Welcome to Marco Island sign was the site of a vehicle accident causing severe damage. Clarification of the accident, damage report, estimates to repair and replace, and procedures in affect, were discussed by the Big Flag Committee at a recent meeting. Christmas Decorating Contest Committee Plan for the 16th Annual House and Business Decorating Contest

The Christmas House, Business and Condominium Decorating Contest begins the week beginning Monday, December 10 announced Chairman, Dave Rice. Enthusiasm is building among Marco Island residents as early decorations already displayed. In 2011, the contest included over 1800 homes and 125 businesses judged. Marco Island has long been noted for the many outstanding Christmas decorated homes. Residents and visitors alike add to their Christmas spirit by driving around the Island to see the innovative decorations. 16th Annual Christmas House Decorating Contest

Premier Sponsor LCEC Supports Event In 1997, Dave Rice, then the overall Christmas Island Style Chairman, requested Lee County Electric Company to support a new event on Marco Island which was a contest to honor the top Christmas decorated homes. Marco’s Big Flag Shirt, an Olympic Hit

Marco Island’s official, Big Flag Shirt, is receiving lots of compliments and questions by the media, volunteers and fans in London.  Suzanne Smith Guerin, daughter of Tom and Yvonne Smith of Naples, has appeared in the shirt in an Olympic TV segment and the subject of many USAfan and volunteers photos. Pictured here at an Olympic site, Suzanne was selected as a volunteer by the Olympic organizers. When not performing volunteer duties, Suzanne and family have attended multiple events including the opening ceremonies. Suzanne received her shirt along with matching shirts for son Jack, daughter Madeline and visiting niece, Jacqueline Meth, as gifts from her parents ... Read More »

“Go” Big Flag Phase 4 Campaign Begins

As the first gust of wind billowed the Big Flag at the Memorial Day Ceremony, Chairman, Dave Rice reminded all in attendance that, there was still unfinished business. “The Big Flag committee, comprised of Dick Shanahan, Keith Dameron, Leo Sutera and  Lita Berger guaranteed our City Council and citizens, that no public funds would be used to support the project, now, tomorrow or forever”, stated Rice. Big Flag Commentary

Due to media deadlines, this will be the final commentary before the Big Flag Ceremony, to be held on Memorial Day, May 28th at 3 PM sharp. The site will be at the newly installed flag pole, located on the 2nd median on the Marco Island side of the Jolly Bridge.   Some updates and tips for spectators….. • Parking has logistic issues. Members Join Big Flag Campaign

The Big Flag Fund Raising Campaign received a surprise donation of $3003 from members of the Admiralty House Condominium Association. Jean Eggert, a long time resident, Penn State University graduate and avid football fan, told the committee that she became particularly interested after reading a recent news media commentary by Big Flag Committee Chairman, Dave Rice, about Penn State and Coach Joe Paterno. Having set up a meeting with Rice, she presented him with an envelope full of checks from her neighbors. An all time record number of entries: 1,722 Homes & 126 Business Properties. 2011 winners are:  • Home Decorating Winner: 1232 Fruitland Ave • Business Property Decorating Winner: 493 Tallwood St., Building “A” Condo Association. The Decorating Contest Final judging took place on December 16 by the entire committee and invited guest judges, Jenny Beuhrer, Bette McGilvray and Steve Josselyn.
