Fundamentally Speaking

Skeet shooting- field layout

COACH WAYNE’S CORNER Wayne Clark WClark@cityofmarcoisland.com As an instructor and competitor in both tennis and pickleball, I have noticed a difference in how these two games are played. Here at the Marco Island Racquet Center, both sports are mostly played as doubles. As I watch games and matches being played, I see a significant difference when observing tennis in how much, or how little, all four players are participating in the point as compared to pickleball. The fundamental strategy of all doubles in both sports is for players to work together as a unit. Even though the two sports are very similar, ... Read More »

The House of Horrors – Part 1

Carol Glassman’s kitchen, where serious leaks from the roof caused major damage. PHOTOS BY CAROL GLASSMAN

By Carol Glassman This is not just one of those spooky fantasies about a haunted house where terrible things happen and you are afraid to walk around; it’s a true story about a rather nice house, where terrible things happened, enough to make you walk out, heartbroken. The story isn’t really unusual, nor is it unfortunately, unique. Almost everyone who has suffered through home repairs probably has a similar tale of woe, but as you follow this one over the weeks, you may understand why I felt it needed to be shared with the public as a “consumer beware” saga. ... ASK THE CFP® PRACTITIONER Darcie Guerin darcie.guerin@raymondjames.com “The best thinking has been done in solitude. The worst has been done in turmoil.” ~ Thomas A. Edison Question: Could you explain what happened to the stock market during the first week of 2016? Answer: That’s a tall order, but here’s my best shot at describing a few of the market moving events that took place during that first week. For starters, China took center stage, overshadowing everything else. To borrow from the 1960s BBC political satire show featuring David Frost, “that was the week that was.” For anyone associated with financial markets in ... Read More »

COACH WAYNE’S CORNER Wayne Clark WClark@cityofmarcoisland.com In previous articles, I have discussed how equipment such as our racquet, string and string tension can affect our performance and I have talked about the important safety issues related to playing on a properly groomed or squeegeed court. It is also important that we have the proper shoes and clothing when playing tennis or pickleball. So let’s start at the bottom and work our way up: Proper court shoes. Tennis shoes are specifically designed for movement in the sport of tennis. In tennis, there is a lot of lateral movement, along with forward motion. Running ... Read More »

Can You Really Boost Your Metabolism?

B11-CBN-4-17-15-19

By Crystal Manjarres Crystal@PinkIslandFitness.com I’m sure you’ve read the claims splashed across fitness magazines and various canisters of green tea: “fire up your metabolism” reads Herbalife’s Ultimate Thermofit or “naturally boosts metabolism – no jitters” reads Garden of Life’s fucoThin Green supplement. Sounds legit, right? Sadly it’s not. The scary truth is that these supplement companies need no evidence whatsoever that what they claim is actually true. It’s frustrating for the consumer who wastes their hard-earned cash on flimsy statements, which further demonstrates the rule of thumb that if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. ... ALL THAT GLITTERS Richard Alan harborgoldsmith@comcast.net Season on Marco Island is in full swing, and I survived another Valentine’s Day rush that required my son and me only a couple of nights burning the midnight oil in the work shop. It was the smoothest, hassle free and profitable Valentine week I can ever remember! While in the process of investigating and individually interrogating my sales staff I found the reason it was not the normal yearly, chaotic Valentine’s experience… One thing stood out…Endless Jewelry.
