City Council Honors Dr. Fay Biles

Utility Rates Resolution Approved


By Noelle H. Lowery It is almost official. The Marco Island City Council voted at Monday’s meeting to approve a resolution for utility rates increases for the next five years. Pending a final vote on the increases themselves by the city council, the first increase would be for seven percent and would be effective as of November 1, 2013. Subsequent annual increases range between 2.1 and 2.3 percent, and would become effective on October 1 for the next four years beginning in 2014. Marco Island’s Big Flag Fly’s Again

  At the City Council meeting today, following Councils approval of Phase II construction plans to enhance Veteran’s Park, Big Flag Committee Chairman, Dave Rice announced to the audience that in honor of the veteran’s at today’s meeting that the Big Flag at the Jolley Bridge is again flying. Letter to the Editor: Judy Sacher

During the Community Forum at last night’s City Council Meeting both myself and several others of our community gave our reaction to a 2-page letter that our City Council Chairman wrote in which he goes on at length as to why condominium owners should not support either my husband, Larry Sacher, as well as Ken Honecker and Amadeo Petricca in their campaign for City Council. Council: seawalls & budget

By Coastal Breeze News Staff The issue of how to approach seawall construction and repair dominated the discussion at Monday’s city council meeting. The ordinance that passed first reading now limits the use of residential lots for construction staging to a single 120 day permit. Chairman Larry Magel came out firmly in favor of ending such use altogether: “It doesn’t look like a hardship to me to use the commercial lots for staging…I would like to prohibit it altogether.” Magel tasked the Planning Board and Waterways committees to recommend viable alternatives and cited the possibility of the city taking over ... Several seats remain open including a seat on the Parks and Recreation Advisory committee, one on the Code Enforcement board and four seats on the Utilities Advisory Committee. In the past, terms on committees and boards were staggered. Candidates are appointed by individual council members and then approved at a City Council meeting. The 2012 Marco in Bloom Landscape Awards are set to be announced at the City Council Meeting in April, but applications are already being accepted. The BAC has five categories where awards are given.
