COASTAL COMMENTS Donna Fiala [email protected] Recently, someone suggested I mention the activity that will take place at the Collier Blvd/US-951 corridor and also on US-41 E. corridor. Now that we have folks coming back for season, this might be a good time to mention what you can look forward to in the coming months and years. *First and foremost, the big item is the construction/reconfiguration of the US-951/US-41 intersection, which will begin in November and last from 24 to 30 months. You might have noticed a decorative wall being built at the entrance to the Eagle Creek Community, with funds ... Read More »

good-news

Donna Fiala [email protected] Here is the good news story of the month/or year: the City, County, and State worked together to save a stranded bottle-nosed dolphin in the Tigertail Lagoon/Sand Dollar spit area of Marco Island. The dolphin was first spotted by Kimberly Dowling during her morning walk. She was alerted by a helicopter pilot who landed on the beach to seek help for the stranded dolphin around 7:30 AM. The pilot explained to Ms. Dowling that a dolphin was stranded and he needed to borrow a cell phone to dial 911 to get help. The dolphin was stranded in ... Read More »

COASTAL COMMENTS Donna Fiala [email protected] How many of you know what a Key Club is? It’s the High School version of Kiwanis! We happen to have the largest and dynamic Key Club in all of Collier County, possibly Florida. These young people, all so talented and the picture of future success, held a car wash to raise funds for their projects that reach out to the kids in our community. They came in force – 32 of them! They all attend Lely High School and all work together as a team. One young man approached me and mentioned he was ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Hooray, Hooray! The Fresh Market held its Grand Opening this week – September 18th – in the Shoppes of Eagle Creek on the corner of Collier Blvd. and US-41. They let me have a sneak peek last week after all the shelves were in and they were assembling all the canned goods and preparing the fresh meat and produce departments. The walls were already decorated to make you feel like you are being welcomed into someone’s home. It looks awesome! I’m sure we’ll all flock to the store and want to shop there for all of our ... Donna Fiala [email protected] Summer is going by so quickly. I’ve spent a little time in Ohio Amish Country and just finished watching a group of Amish men play baseball. These guys are so strong they almost tear the hide off the baseballs. Meanwhile the youngsters, from age 5 to 11, were playing kickball in their bare feet! The little blond tow-head 5 year old ran like the wind! You should have seen him, with his hair blowing up in the wind. So cute. *Fresh Market has received their Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, which means they can now hire more people ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Collier County and the City of Marco Island continue to work together for the benefit of their citizens. As of this writing, one of their goals is to encourage greater use of Tigertail Park to help alleviate congestion in the Island’s South Beach parking area (which gets pretty snarled up during Season), and also to prepare for additional residential and multi-family development coming on line in District One in the near future. Since Mainsail Drive, Isles of Capri, Goodland, and East Naples are closer to Tigertail Beach, it might be the perfect endeavor now to enlarge and ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Although summer is always a little quieter, there still is plenty going on. Lots of relays, events, picnics and fun things. There is also a great deal of construction going on as we move further out of the recession. New businesses are buying up buildings that already exist and turning them into new, thriving enterprises, thus taking buildings off existing inventory rather than allowing them to deteriorate further. Another positive about buying existing buildings is there is no impact fee to pay other than public utilities, which is a great help to young businesses just starting out ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Things are moving a little slower these days. Not much traffic, easy access to restaurants and parking spots, and most of us stay indoors where it’s cool while we get some long awaited chores done that we’ve been putting off during Season. Ah, Enjoy! *A good news item for those people who live in or love Port of the Islands. As you know, the boat ramp convenience store is up and running and carrying more products as the need is identified. Now the long awaited Fire Station is about to be furnished. When the county bought the ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] A message came to all the Commissioners last week from The Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce that I’d like to share with you. It said the chamber was pleased to announce that the Miami Dolphins football team just joined the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce and they plan on becoming very involved in our community. It said “here is how they describe themselves: The Miami Dolphins, owned by Stephen M. Ross, currently play in the AFC East of the Nat’l Football League. The organization has played in five Super Bowls, winning championships in 1972 and 1973. The ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov[email protected]     Just recently a number of us took a trip to the major recycling center in Pembroke Pines, where much of our recycling waste is sent. This trip was a specific request from our own Marco resident, John Coff, who was accompanied by Fred Twilla. Also along was another Marco resident, Vince Kiernan. Most of us learned more than we ever knew about recycling and the items that are acceptable and what happens to the items that are collected but cannot be used. One of the many things we learned was to take caps off of ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] School is out, but not before Lely High School AGAIN achieved an A-school status! We’ve got some really great students attending that school and we are all so proud of them! The Lely High School Key Club (the high school version of Kiwanis Club) had their Car Wash fundraiser the day after school let out, but it’s the first fundraiser for the new Key Club year. Outgoing president and graduate – Karissa Zeigelmann, Bonnie & Craig Woodward’s granddaughter, was right there celebrating her last hurrah. Karissa Zeigelmann and Rafa Rosas, incoming president, also visited the East Naples ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Hats off to the oldest, er – richest in years, or, ah – most mature………well, whatever you want to call him – Our own John Arceri has just graduated from Ave Maria Law School, and is the oldest student on record in the State of Florida to have ever earned a law degree. Now that’s called perseverance and dedication – not only to John but also to Liliana, his precious wife of almost 50 years! At times he never thought he’d make it, but he never quit, nor did she! She supported him every step of the ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] My friend (a friend to all of us, actually) Arlene Coff, mentioned the other day at the Marco Island Kiwanis Club’s Stone Crab Claw Dinner that she had a great idea for the old K-Mart store. So many people hope something moves in there soon, so I was eager to hear her idea. She said “A Bowling Alley”! What a great idea! There is no place around this end of the county to bowl, and lots of people miss it. So – to that special someone out there who is enterprising and looking for a way to ... Read More »

Donna Fiala [email protected] Well Folks, our winter residents are going home, and that means so is our marvelous volunteer work force; the backbone of our community. Now is the time for all those who have been wanting to try their hand at helping out to think about places they would love to serve. Of course, there is the library and the museum, really fun places to work. And now we have a new pick awaiting us: The Physicians Regional Marco Island Walk-In Clinic in the Shops of Marco on San Marco Road. My friend Shirlee already volunteers there and has ... By Donna Fiala [email protected] Some of you have taken one or more of my County Government tours to acquaint yourself with what goes on behind the scenes in county government such as the landfill and gas to energy plant, water and wastewater treatment plants, parks, museums, the jail, etc. I am in the planning stages for next year’s tours and wanted to mention them to you, as well as ask if any of you have any special requests you would like to submit to my office. We continue to have requests each year for the Landfill (we could even include ... Read More »

By Donna Fiala [email protected] What a fun filled month February was! There were so many things to do on Marco Island there was hardly a minute to spare! Coming up is the St.Paddy’s Day Parade at 1PM on Sunday, March 10th. Our wonderful Father Tim will be the Parade’s Grand Marshal. As always, our Irish “princess” Kathleen Reynolds is organizing the parade sponsored by the Sons & Daughters of Erin. Kathleen has so much dedication and enthusiasm over everything Irish that it makes this German/Hungarian woman (that’s me) want to be part Irish! The party actually starts on Saturday at ... By Donna Fiala [email protected] AND THE WINNER IS: Lou and Linda VanMeter of Goodland are very proud of their 3 year-old granddaughter, Arden Jean DeShazor, who won the title of 2013 Buzzard Princess and also took 2nd place for best costume. Congratulations Arden, Lou and Linda! On Thursday, Feb. 21st, I hosted a Town Hall Meeting at 6:30 PM at the Historical Society’s Rose Auditorium. The meeting brought folks up to date on county issues regarding roads and new developments coming to our area as well as a message from our County Manager and information on the County Parks on ... Goodland is a happening place!

A packed tent, including many of Stan’s family members and friends, paid tribute to the man “who put Goodland on the map.” Photos by Natalie Strom

By Donna Fiala On January 29th there was dedication ceremony to rename the Goodland Bridge to the Stan Gober Memorial Bridge. I don’t remember a more moving dedication in the years I have been doing this, nor one that had more people in attendance. There must have been at least 100 people under that tent while Stan’s favorite rendition of the National Anthem opened the ceremony. There were many tears and goose-pimples among the attendees. One of Stan’s band members played for us before and after. Stan’s portraits were looking out at the audience as though he were with us. ... Read More »

Runways and Renourishment

COASTAL COMMENTS Donna Fiala [email protected] Runways: Many things are happening around the County; some are quite controversial. I usually stay away from government talk, but today, through a little encouragement, I will write about what happened with the Marco and Immokalee Airport runway resurfacing and also about the Hideaway Beach/Collier Creek erosion control structures. Last year, the Airport Director, Chris Curry (who will be the speaker at the Marco Kiwanis Club on Thursday, Feb. 21st) advised the County Commission that the FDOT had determined that both airport runways were in “very poor” condition and would need resurfacing within the next ... Donna Fiala [email protected] Happy New Year everyone! Let’s hope this year brings more peacefulness, progress, happiness and good health to us all. The Marco Chapter of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 95 held their “Change of Watch” ceremony on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Hideaway Beach. The new Flotilla Commander is Arne Kelsey and the Vice Flotilla Commander is Skip Lee. I was honored to again be invited to view the ceremony and mingle with these distinguished servants to our community’s waterways. Not only do they hold search and rescues, as most would expect, but they monitor the weather, ... Read More »
