Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net There are always good things to mention in this column. Recently, I went to Tallahassee to represent Collier County at the Florida Association of Counties Legislation Week. I am on the board of directors for the FAC. While there, I called on a number of our local legislators to tell them of our county’s concerns and priorities. One of the items especially important to Marco Island is the beach and continued renourishment dollars. The county’s Coastal Management Director, Gary McAlpin, had requested state dollars to help with funding needed for renourishment. While in Tallahassee I happened to ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Another veteran has passed on to a better place. He was our own Walter Tucker — whom I considered one of my very special friends. Sadly, I didn’t know of his funeral until after it had taken place, as I was in Tallahassee when the obit was in the paper, or at least I assume it was in the paper. Walter was one of the few survivors left from Pearl Harbor. Even in his 90s, he never forgot a thing. He was always willing to offer a helping hand to his friends, and was as feisty as ... Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net We have some “stars” amongst us! We’ve known for a number of years that Mr. and Mrs. Jon Ladig were “angels amongst us” as they stepped forward to make our Marco Island museum a reality, and they continued to support and encourage the museum every step of the way, attending most of the functions and befriending everyone they met. Now, they also have been recognized as “Stars in the Arts” by the United Arts Council of Collier County. They received accolades and praise at the Stars in the Arts Annual Awards Luncheon. Many Marco Islanders attended the ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net A special thank you to Tony Voight. His business is always the first company to sponsor the Gulf Coast Little League each year! The coaches were kind enough to invite me to throw the first ball for this season. It was a wonderful ceremony with kids of all ages from 4 to 14! Families were everywhere, supporting and encouraging their players. Marco Island is also a part of this group, and who was right there, up front? It was Bill Morris, a prominent attorney on Marco Island, with his little one. When the coaches contacted me last ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net The Mackle Park issue is buzzing around the Island, but I usually do not give my opinions on anything the city is dealing with. But with Parks, I have such a strong opinion and such a great love for our children and families that I would like to contribute my comments. As you know, I live in East Naples and have for 40 years. We were usually on the losing end of receiving things that others had in their section of town (but that is now changing). The playground the county built in East Naples in 1987 ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net It’s February — the month of love. Wouldn’t it be lovely if all through the month we treated each other with loving kindness and respect, and loved our neighbor as we love our friends? And make sure your family knows how much you love THEM! Happy Valentine’s Day! Don’t forget to treat your special Valentine with love and a little token of your devotion. • You’ll love the Erich Kunzel Concert Series presented by the Bayshore Cultural and Performing Arts Center, which continues with their next program on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 PM at Edison State ... Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.ne Kudos to the third grade class at Tommie Barfield! These young people sang their hearts out at the Arbor Day presentation at Veterans Park. It was so cold I had to wear gloves, and these little ones didn’t seem the least bit bothered by the weather. They were so beautiful! Then, we were entertained by the band from Marco Island Charter Middle School. I couldn’t even imagine how they could move their fingers on their instruments, much less perform so beautifully! Three city councilors were there, and the new city manager, interim city manager, fire chief, chief ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net The holiday season is now behind us, and most of the lights have come down. It just doesn’t look as warm and friendly and happy as it did just a week ago…..and now it feels like we’re living up north it’s so cold and dismal. Luckily, we DO live here, and we can expect it to bounce back and be our beautiful paradise soon. Until then, I even have my heat on at home. Brrrr *Some good things are taking place right over our bridge! Yup – the Outback is growing quickly. Hopefully, they’ll be finished before ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Today, while attending the craft show on the Isles of Capri, I had many people come over to talk to me about the new additions at Tigertail Beach. Ann and Eddie Hall said they thought it was “astronomical” and “beautiful.” They took their grandchildren there and were pleasantly delighted with the divided playground depending on the age group. They also took a look at the bathroom now being constructed at the far end of the large parking lot in the back. Donald and Joanna Sunshine find it much more convenient than traveling all the way to South ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net In case you weren’t aware, I give tours every year to anyone who would like to attend (if we aren’t already full) to experience some of the county facilities first-hand that your tax dollars help to fund. For example, the landfill, the jail, the Tax Collector, the Supervisor of Elections, the Government Complex, Mosquito Control, etc. Some on Marco Island and Isles of Capri have participated, to my delight. Some of those upcoming tours are: Mosquito Control – Dec. 5 from 10 AM to noon (every one provides their own transportation so there is no cost to ... Read More »

COASTAL COMMENTS Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Recently, someone suggested I mention the activity that will take place at the Collier Blvd/US-951 corridor and also on US-41 E. corridor. Now that we have folks coming back for season, this might be a good time to mention what you can look forward to in the coming months and years. *First and foremost, the big item is the construction/reconfiguration of the US-951/US-41 intersection, which will begin in November and last from 24 to 30 months. You might have noticed a decorative wall being built at the entrance to the Eagle Creek Community, with funds ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Here is the good news story of the month/or year: the City, County, and State worked together to save a stranded bottle-nosed dolphin in the Tigertail Lagoon/Sand Dollar spit area of Marco Island. The dolphin was first spotted by Kimberly Dowling during her morning walk. She was alerted by a helicopter pilot who landed on the beach to seek help for the stranded dolphin around 7:30 AM. The pilot explained to Ms. Dowling that a dolphin was stranded and he needed to borrow a cell phone to dial 911 to get help. The dolphin was stranded in ... Read More »

COASTAL COMMENTS Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net How many of you know what a Key Club is? It’s the High School version of Kiwanis! We happen to have the largest and dynamic Key Club in all of Collier County, possibly Florida. These young people, all so talented and the picture of future success, held a car wash to raise funds for their projects that reach out to the kids in our community. They came in force – 32 of them! They all attend Lely High School and all work together as a team. One young man approached me and mentioned he was ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Hooray, Hooray! The Fresh Market held its Grand Opening this week – September 18th – in the Shoppes of Eagle Creek on the corner of Collier Blvd. and US-41. They let me have a sneak peek last week after all the shelves were in and they were assembling all the canned goods and preparing the fresh meat and produce departments. The walls were already decorated to make you feel like you are being welcomed into someone’s home. It looks awesome! I’m sure we’ll all flock to the store and want to shop there for all of our ... Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Summer is going by so quickly. I’ve spent a little time in Ohio Amish Country and just finished watching a group of Amish men play baseball. These guys are so strong they almost tear the hide off the baseballs. Meanwhile the youngsters, from age 5 to 11, were playing kickball in their bare feet! The little blond tow-head 5 year old ran like the wind! You should have seen him, with his hair blowing up in the wind. So cute. *Fresh Market has received their Temporary Certificate of Occupancy, which means they can now hire more people ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Collier County and the City of Marco Island continue to work together for the benefit of their citizens. As of this writing, one of their goals is to encourage greater use of Tigertail Park to help alleviate congestion in the Island’s South Beach parking area (which gets pretty snarled up during Season), and also to prepare for additional residential and multi-family development coming on line in District One in the near future. Since Mainsail Drive, Isles of Capri, Goodland, and East Naples are closer to Tigertail Beach, it might be the perfect endeavor now to enlarge and ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Although summer is always a little quieter, there still is plenty going on. Lots of relays, events, picnics and fun things. There is also a great deal of construction going on as we move further out of the recession. New businesses are buying up buildings that already exist and turning them into new, thriving enterprises, thus taking buildings off existing inventory rather than allowing them to deteriorate further. Another positive about buying existing buildings is there is no impact fee to pay other than public utilities, which is a great help to young businesses just starting out ... Read More »

Donna Fiala donnafiala@colliergov.net Things are moving a little slower these days. Not much traffic, easy access to restaurants and parking spots, and most of us stay indoors where it’s cool while we get some long awaited chores done that we’ve been putting off during Season. Ah, Enjoy! *A good news item for those people who live in or love Port of the Islands. As you know, the boat ramp convenience store is up and running and carrying more products as the need is identified. Now the long awaited Fire Station is about to be furnished. When the county bought the ... Read More »
