Approximately 100 attendees were present as U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar cut the ribbon during the formal dedication to open the new Tamiami Trail Bridge located in Miami-Dade County on March 19th. Eighty-five years ago, in April of 1928, the Tamiami Trail was completed, allowing motorists to travel by automobile from Tampa to Miami. At the time, it was considered one of the world’s great marvels. Since then, it has also unfortunately served as a dam, blocking the flow of the Everglades watershed from the north to the south. Within the next few months, the removal of the ... Read More »

Youth Program in the Everglades

BUZZ FROM THE SWAMP Patricia Huff [email protected] A program in the Everglades is designed to provide kids an opportunity to transform them into responsible young adults, helping them develop confidence and competency in vital life skills, leading them to acceptance of personal responsibility, and assisting them in making better choices. Based in Tampa, AMI Kids started in 1969 when Ft. Lauderdale Juvenile Court Judge Frank Orlando was frustrated with seeing the same kids come before his court time after time. The only option for them was “reform” school, but they would soon be back out on the streets again. Judge Orlando ... Read More »

Midsummer night’s dream in The Everglades

BUZZ FROM THE SWAMP  Patricia Huff  [email protected] It’s the end of July and summer is almost over. We’ve been enduring hot muggy summer days but our nights are cool, the result of our wonderful late afternoon showers. My favorite time of day is late afternoon or early evening when my husband has a day off, and he’s home to enjoy the setting sun. We’ll sit out on our dock with a beer and watch the boats go by or the fish jumping in the river. It’s peaceful. On these summer nights the wind offers a gentle breeze down the river so ...
