National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES By Nikkie Sardelli October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In just this year alone, approximately 231,840 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and of that number, a saddening 40,290 will lose the battle. This is 40,290 too many. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the U.S., and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. Additionally, there will be about 2,350 men diagnosed, with about 440 of them losing their battle. The American Cancer Society is involved through their annual nationwide Making Strides Against Breast Cancer ... Read More »

HOPE is in the Air

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Sr. Manager Distinguished Events American Cancer Society, Marco I start each New Year with lots of great ideas, new energy and plenty of optimism that we will do better than the year before and as you can guess that gets harder each year. This year was no different; we laid out our plans, set our dates, recruited our committees and got to work. Our hope was that members of our community would want to help us further our mission and create more birthdays. Little did we know that our hope would turn into reality ... Read More »

American Cancer Society Saving 500 Lives Per Day

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Sr. Manager Distinguished Events American Cancer Society, Marco New data shows that the American Cancer Society continues to create a world with more birthdays by saving 500 lives per day. In fact, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer today will survive at least five years. These are encouraging statistics, and they motivate me to work as hard as I can to help finish this fight. I invite you to join me. So, you may be thinking how do we make this happen? We do it by working together to raise the funds that the ... Read More »

American Cancer Society Leads Fight to End Breast Cancer

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Did you know that the American Cancer Society invests more in breast cancer research than any other cancer type to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease? We’re in every community providing free information and services to people fighting the disease. Today, one in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer turns to us for help and support. Over the past 20 years, we have helped more than 4 million women get potentially lifesaving breast cancer screening tests. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than ... Read More »

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig The American Cancer Society of Marco Island is excited to announce that Relay For Life of Marco Island is scheduled for April 18-19 at Mackle Park. Relay for Life is the single largest fundraising event in the world, and in 2015, we are recognizing 30 years of raising funds so that researchers can find treatments, preventative measures and cures for cancer. For Relayers around the world, this anniversary is particularly meaningful as the founder of Relay For Life, Dr. Gordy Klatt, passed away last month from heart failure after a long struggle with cancer ... Volunteer Leaders Make a Difference

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Cancer never sleeps, and at the Marco Island American Cancer Society, we never forget that we are here to finish the fight. We had an amazingly successful 2014 and are actively gearing up for a new season. I have written on several occasions about how we would not exist nor would we even have local events if it weren’t for our volunteers who give their time, talent and treasure to help men, women and children survive cancer and live longer, healthier lives. I am so grateful to our volunteer leaders, and I’d like to ... Read More »

AMERICAN CANCE SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig In 2013, a group of passionate volunteers led by Marco Island American Cancer Society board member Monte Lazarus worked together with the American Cancer Society to hold a “Luau Against Breast Cancer.” For a first-time event we had a wonderful response from the community with support from First National Bank of the Gulf Coast, Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club and the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort and Spa. Together We Will Finish The Fight

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig On April 12 and 13, community teams, friends and family descended upon Mackle Park for 14 hours to “Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back” at the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. This year, the signature event was presented by one of our long time supporters, Robert J. Flugger. The theme was “A World of Hope,” and all of the teams selected a country to inspire them beginning with fundraising to campsite decorations to the food sold by their teams. There was a tremendous cultural and international vibe at the event, and participants and guests ... Read More »

What A Year!

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Exactly one year ago, I embarked on a new role as the Unit Executive Director for the Marco Island Unit of the American Cancer Society, and what a year it has been. I knew when my husband and I chose Marco Island as our new home in 2007 it was full of friendly people who believed in community and supporting one another. What I have since learned working with all of our wonderful volunteers, board members and business leaders is how willing people are to give their time to support important causes such as ... Breast Cancer Screening Saves Lives

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig The American Cancer Society appreciates the Coastal Breeze for highlighting Breast Cancer Awareness throughout the month of October. While we continue to look for causes, treatments and cures for breast cancer there is one thing that all women should do as a preventative measure – and that is to get a mammogram. As you can see from the following statistics, the combination of mammograms and new treatments are saving lives and creating more birthdays. Let’s all pledge to get our mammograms by the end of the year as a present to ourselves. Mammography Rates are Steady ... Read More »

Businesses & Community Fight Cancer Together

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over, kids are back in school and season is just around the corner. We have had a busy summer at The American Cancer Society and I wanted to update everyone about two recent events that without the support of our local businesses and citizens, would not have been possible. The first was the 4th annual Stick a Fork in Cancer sponsored by WINK News. Local restaurants agree to participate and to donate a portion of one day’s revenue to the American Cancer Society. This year 56 restaurants from ... Read More »

A Salute To Our Volunteers

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES Lisa Honig Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Cancer Society. Without our volunteers here on Marco Island there would be no events such as the Imagination Ball and Relay For Life nor would we be able to support other events such as Shoot Down Kids Cancer, The Walkers Marine Fishing Tournament or the upcoming Luau to support Breast Cancer research. With only two people in our local office we rely on our volunteer board and committees to be our advocates in the community and to spread the word about all the good things that the American Cancer ...
