Planning is underway for a weeklong celebration for all ages to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Marco Island’s incorporation as a municipality.
The Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Marco Family YMCA, the Marco Island Center for the Arts, the Marco Island Civic Association, the Marco Island History Museum, the community’s three public schools and of course, the city itself are among the collaborators creating a line-up of festivities.
Representatives of each organization will meet in mid-July to lock-in plans for the anniversary week, which begins on August 27.
“Each group is going to do an event at their own location,” said Samantha Malloy, the city’s manager of parks, culture and recreation. Each day will feature the events of a specific organization and all the events will be held from 4 PM to 6 PM, she added.
The city will hold its festivities on August 28, the official date of incorporation.
Mallow said some of the organizations will be involving geocaching, hunting for and finding a hidden object using GPS coordinates posted on a website, as part of their activities.
In preparation for the celebration, artist and Marco resident J.J. Stinchcomb has designed a new logo and street-banners for the city to be used throughout the remainder of the year.
