MIPD to Hold 2nd Citizen Academy

By CBN Staff

With the overwhelming success of its first Citizen Academy, the Marco Island Police Department is now accepting applications for its second Citizen Academy.

The 40-hour Academy will begin in November, and will be held in the evening on alternating Wednesdays and Saturday afternoons. On the last day, current Academy graduates will participate in a graduation event with former Academy Alumni, police officers, Marco Police Foundation members and city officials.

The goal of the Citizen Academy is to bridge the information gap between MIPD and the public by teaching basic police operations and techniques. Many policies and procedures related to the criminal justice system are foreign to citizens, and it is expected that through education and discussion many of the questions generated by the public regarding law enforcement can be answered. City and department officials feel the Academy is a successful strategy to develop new partnerships within the community, as well as preserving and enhancing formerly established and valued relationships.

The Academy’s curriculum:

• MIPD Mission, budget, goals and crime statistics • MIPD organizational chart and staff introductions • Community and intelligence-led policing concepts • Marine operations and safety • MIPD station and asset tour • Traffic crash investigation • Criminal investigations • Being a good witness • Impaired driving • Youth programs • Vehicle pursuits • Traffic stops • Use of force • Domestic violence • Search and seizure • Police Foundation • Crime prevention • Patrol procedures • Officer selection • Radio operations • Internal affairs • Laws of arrest • Ride alongs • Forensics • Taser • 911

MIPD anticipates demand for the program will outpace availability. Preference will be given to city residents, or those whose occupation or place of business is on Marco Island. To apply, please complete the Application and Liability Waiver. You may obtain these documents on the MIPD’s website: http://www.cityofmarcoisland.com/index.aspx?page=174.

You also may request them via phone at 239-389-5050 to be mailed, emailed or faxed. Please return the application and waiver by mail or in person to: MIPD (Citizen Academy), 51 Bald Eagle Dr., Marco Island, FL 34145

For questions regarding the Citizen’s Academy, please call Interim Chief Dave Baer at 239-389-5050.
