AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY CARES
The American Cancer Society of Marco Island is a volunteer driven organization that depends on a Volunteer Leadership Council. Our Volunteer Leadership Council consists of hard working individuals who donate their time to our mission by serving on committees for events such as Imagination Ball, Relay For Life, Shoot Down Kids Cancer, the Luau Against Breast Cancer and many other fundraisers. In addition, they work with our local medical community to encourage them to inform patients about the services that the American Cancer Society provides right here on Marco Island.
In our annual elections, Gary Landis was elected chair and Dr. Daniel Wasserman was elected vice chair. Joining them on the Leadership Council are Bill Dean, Dr. Loan Lam, Monte Lazarus, Raul Medina, Rick Medwedeff, Rachel Schenk and Val Simon. We are very lucky to have these outstanding members of our community serve on our Leadership Council and I cannot thank them enough for their service. I would also like to recognize and thank our retiring board member Ray Jean for his service and commitment to our mission and for his objective counsel and guidance in my first year as Executive Director. He has accepted a position as board member for the University of Maine and we know he will serve the university well.
Our year is off to a great start with successful fundraising events all over Marco Island. Hideaway held its Second Annual Casino Night that provided lots of gaming fun for almost 200 guests. The Island Country Club Charitable Foundation held a golf tournament for 150 golfers that was a huge success. South Seas East Condominium Association had its third annual barbecue which was a sell-out with 100 guests enjoying great food, auctions and entertainment. Bistro Soleil held its Sixth Annual Fight Like a Girl Fashion Show where Marco Island Clothing Company showcased new fashions for the year. Our Imagination Ball was better than ever with almost 200 supporters in attendance. They enjoyed dinner, dancing and silent/live auctions at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort.
All of these outstanding fundraisers were planned by volunteers with a passion to find a cure for cancer, and we are so grateful for their support and leadership. If you haven’t had a chance to participate there is still time for you to join us in the fight against cancer at one of several events coming up in the next few months:
Shoot Down Kids Cancer: March 22, 9 AM, Gulf Coast Clays (formerly Port of the Islands Gun Club). For tickets and information, contact us at the Marco Island Office.
Zumba For Relay: March 22 and April 5, 10 AM, Marco Island Fire Station.
Relay For Life: April 12 & 13, 4 PM – 6 AM, Mackle Park. It’s not too late to form a team. Give us a call to find out how you can participate!
I look forward to seeing you soon and to celebrating a world with more birthdays.
