Now that the holidays are behind us, many of us are waking up to the New Year feeling sluggish, bloated, hungover and/or exhausted. Not exactly putting your best foot forward for 2014, are we?

Whether the aforementioned describes you or not, chances are you want to feel your best each and every day — regardless of the New Year. Most are taking this time to jump into their New Year’s resolutions of health and fitness — even those who swear that they don’t make resolutions.

Either way, who doesn’t want to start off each and every day with energy, vitality, happiness and health? Whether you fell off the wagon hard over the past few holiday months or plowed through them with ease, here are some tips that will help you feel amazing! Adopt one, some or all of these ideas, and you’ll reap some serious rewards.

• Get moving: Whether you start off with walking around the block, swimming laps in your pool, or bicycling around town, get your body moving. Start off small, and build slowly on your distance and exertion so that you don’t give up on the first week. And don’t go hard every day! Take a day or two off if it’s been a while since you’ve trained consistently. If you are a seasoned fitness buff, now is the time to challenge yourself. Try cross training if you stick to the same old fitness routine. Mix in some rollerblading, if you normally run, or include some weight training, if all you do is play tennis. Make sure to listen to your body, and watch your form so that you prevent injury. If you need help or guidance, hire an experienced trainer.

• Eat clean: Throw out all of that leftover holiday junk food. Go to the library or look online for some healthy recipes that you can easily create and that you will enjoy eating. Pick two or three to start with and go from there so that you don’t wind up in the grocery store all day. Include some snacks from nature while you’re at it: baby carrots with hummus, a cup of blueberries and strawberries, cut up some apples and eat them alone or have them with a tablespoon of nut butter, create little baggies of grapes, pop some plain popcorn, or put some cucumber slices in your water for refreshing drink.

• Cleanse: If you are currently eating clean or are in the process of transitioning to a clean diet, colonic hydrotherapy can help. A lot of people believe that if they eat bad, they simply just eat better the next day, and the bad food is eliminated from their system. Not necessarily. In a teeny-tiny nutshell, if you your colon is dirty from years of eating, alcohol, prescription or recreational drugs and the Standard American Diet of processed foods, then chances are you are not able to absorb all of the nutrients from an uber-healthy diet. Why? If your colon has waste caked up on it — excessive mucus and the like — it could create a barrier to your body being able to absorb the necessary nutrients from your diet (including supplements). Imagine pouring water through a screen (pretend this is your colon absorbing nutrients). Now, picture that screen with dried feces and old, rotting, fermented food incrusted all over it. Imagine trying to pour clean, filtered water through that! Colonics can help remove that unwanted waste material out of the colon so that you can improve your absorption of nutrients, improve digestion and decrease constipation, gas and much more. • Improve your core: If your idea of core training is countless situps, the same tired old routine, or if you don’t even work your core at all — listen up! You are utterly short changing your body if you do not have a strong powerhouse. Your core is your built-in support system, holding your beautiful spine in correct alignment, decreasing stress on the joints (such as the lower back and hips), and helping you function in just about every activity that you do from bending over to tie your shoes to hitting that powerful swing on the golf course. Some great exercises are those that target all of the muscles of the abdominals, lower back, inner thighs, outer thighs and glutes. An excellent group of exercises to target all of the core muscles consistently and simultaneously is Pilates. Pilates will also help improve balance, coordination, agility, stability and flexibility. It’s a win-win.
