On your mark, get set, pedal! The fifth annual Tour de taverns, one of the most popular fund raisers around, is fast approaching. Sponsored every year by the Sandbar and Island Bike Shop, the poker bicycle ride takes place on December 7, beginning at 10 AM.
That’s right. It’s a poker ride – and it’s for a very good cause. Every year, the funds raised are given to a sick child in need of medical care. This year, young Avery McCaskill will receive all funds raised from the event. Miss Avery is currently receiving treatment for Leukemia at the Golisano Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers. Only eight days after starting treatment, her leukemia went into remission, but she must continue these treatments for another two years.
Pedaling in the name of Avery, those who choose to participate will help raise money toward those treatments.
Avery’s bright smile and positive spirit will certainly be mirrored through the participants as they pedal from bar to bar, collecting poker cards and enjoying each other’s company. Raffles will take place at each bar as well.
The Tour de Taverns begins at the Sandbar on Marco Island at 10 AM. Matt Walthour owner of Island Bike Shop has again offered free bike rentals to any who takes the ‘tour.’ Bicycles may be picked up beginning at 9 AM from Island Bike Shop, 1095 Bald Eagle Drive.
The cost to participate is $25, and all who come get a free t-shirt and a card to mark of each bar they have been to. Picking up a card at every bar, the person with the best hand of poker wins when all the bikers return to the Sandbar – their final destination.
In between, they will travel to Sunset Grille, Rookies, CJ’s on the Bay, Snook Inn and the Old Marco Pub.
Those interested can sign up at the Sandbar before, or the day of the event. The Sandbar is located at 826 E Elkcam Circle. For more information, contact email@example.com.
