Football season is finally here.
The NFL Pre-season is drawing to a close, Optimist Football is in full swing andLely High and Marco Island Academy’s weekends are dedicated to the beloved sport. If that weren’t enough, the 9th Annual NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition, hosted at Mackle Park, is just around the corner.
The fun-filled event, which is free to take part in, will be held on Monday, September 16, between 5 PM and 7 PM. The event is for both boys and girls who will compete separately. It is also divided by age – 6/7, 8/9, 10/11, 12/13, and 14,15. Winners in each division will advance to the sectionals competition.
Last year, Abigail Meredith of Marco Island won the female ages 10/11 category, advancing her to the sectional finals held at the Miami Dolphins training facility in Davie, Florida where she also won first place.
Mentioning football can never be complete without mentioning cheerleaders. While family and friends will cheer on their Punt, Pass and Kick kids, those hoping to become a Marco Magic Cheerleader will be busy practicing for try-outs which will be held on Saturday, September 14 at Mackle Park from 11:30 AM until 1:30 PM.
Try-outs are free and open to all ages. The competitive league offers three different squads: mini squad, junior squad and senior squad. Marco Magic Cheerleaders compete against other local cheer squads in the area.
Try-outs are free, and those who make the squad will begin practice right away, as the season lasts for six months – Fall of 2013 to Spring of 2014. Start practicing those high kicks girls!
