Cancer Prevention Study Starting

By Lisa Honig

What if you could personally participate in research that could help determine factors that cause or prevent cancer? What if your involvement, and that research, ultimately leads to eliminate cancer as a major health problem for this and future generations? What if you could make it so just one family never had to hear the words “you have cancer?”

To better understand ways to prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society is recruiting 300,000 men and women across the US and Puerto Rico for a landmark new research study – Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). If you are between 30 and 65 years of age and never been diagnosed with cancer then I invite you to join me on June 13th at the Physicians Regional Clinic Marco Island where together we can participate in a once in a lifetime research project. Cancer survivors and those who do not qualify are asked to help spread the word, and encourage family members and friends to enroll.

This is the third study conducted by the American Cancer Society since the 1950’s. Earlier studies found the link between smoking and lung cancer and more recently studies have found ties between obesity, larger waist sizes and cancer. Your involvement in CPS-3 will help American Cancer Society researchers understand the causes of, and ultimately determine ways to prevent cancer and will ultimately lead them to finding a cure.

It is simple to enroll and will only take a few minutes of your time. It starts with going to our website and finding the location closest to you. If you will not be here in June, check the website for locations in your area. For those of you that would prefer to enroll in Naples we will be enrolling participants at both Physicians Regional Hospitals on June 11th or June 12th . Once you select your appointment time you will then be asked to complete an online assessment about your health history. When your appointment day arrives you will be asked to complete a shorter survey packet, provide a small blood sample (to be collected by trained phlebotomists) and provide a waist measurement. Enrollment will take approximately 20-30 minutes. From that point forward, study participants will be followed over time to update information via periodic mailed surveys (every few years for 20 years).

Are you ready to enroll? Go to www.cancer.org/cps3florida to get started. Appointments are encouraged so that we have the right amount of staff on site to make your enrollment experience a positive and quick one. Walk-ins will be taken on a space available basis.

We want to thank Physicians Regional for their support and for providing our host sites for the study:
