Elvis has leapt to the building

By Randall Kenneth Jones

For those Marco residents who happened to look skyward on the afternoon of Saturday, February 23rd, the highly unique image of ten Elvis impersonators descending upon Marco may now be permanently etched in their memory.

After all, Marco is no stranger to magnificent events but Physicians Regional Healthcare System has likely raised the bar on “grand” with their spectacular celebration to mark the Grand Opening of the new Physicians Regional-Marco Island.

For Marco residents, this occasion may have also slightly redefined an oft-quoted pop-culture axiom. Where Elvis may have once “left the building;” on Marco Island at least, Elvis “leapt to the building.”

Though open to patients since February 11, 2013, the new 8,200 square-foot facility is located at The Shops of Marco at the corner of Barfield and San Marco Road on Marco Island.

Marco Island resident Dr. Carlos Portu serves as the Medical Director for Physicians Regional-Marco Island.

Portu’s personal commitment to the community is already well noted. He recently served on the Parks and Recreation Community Center Committee and currently sits on the Island Advisory Board led by County Commissioner Donna Fiala.

In addition to his responsibilities at Physicians Regional-Marco Island, Portu is Chairman of the Department of Medicine for Physicians Regional Healthcare System and serves on the Board of Directors for Physicians Regional Medical Group—the 60+ physicians directly supporting patients at both the Pine Ridge and Collier Boulevard hospital locations as well as Physicians Regional-Marco Island.

“The fact that we are tied to Physicians Regional Medical Group and both the Pine Ridge and Collier Boulevard hospitals provides a tremendous benefit to the patient community with regards to access to extraordinary medical talent and specialties.” Portu continues, “Plus, because all patient records are stored electronically, physicians and staff at our Marco facility have immediate access to all patient records throughout our system.”

The Walk-in Clinic will be open 7-days a week from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and will serve the patient community seeking immediate (non-emergency) care.

The Primary Care Center, operating Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, will also feature same-day appointments.

Physicians Regional-Marco Island will also provide a Coumadin Clinic on Thursdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

“Our patients receive the convenience of easy access to a primary-care setting—12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Normally you have to be part of a concierge practice to experience that kind of care,” says Portu.

Specifically, visitors to the new state-of-the-art facility can expect to find the Walk-in Clinic and the Primary Care Center as well as Physical Therapy, Rehab, Lab and X-ray services.

“For example, we get X-ray results nearly instantaneously,” states Portu. “Our turnaround time from taking a film to sending it to the radiologist to getting a report back is only about 30 minutes. Basically, you can have your X-ray done and obtain the results faster than you can get a pizza delivered from Domino’s.”

Primary care and specialty services such as pulmonary and cardiology are also currently available. Lab service is offered on site and does not require an appointment.

Though the walk-in clinic has more specialized staff, equipment and resources available than a typical doctor’s office, Portu is quick to remind patients to dial 9-1-1 when experiencing a true emergency such as crushing chest pain, slurred speech, sudden vision loss, rapid onset weakness, and/or significant difficulty breathing.

Portu summarizes, “I am proud of the commitment Physicians Regional has made to the community insofar as investing a lot of money to be here without any outside financial assistance—simply a desire to be a part of our community. As a Marco resident myself, this dedication is important to all of us.”

Collier County District One Commissioner Donna Fiala applauded Physicians Regional’s arrival on Marco, “Physicians Regional Healthcare System is a prominent local business leader and I am excited to welcome their new health care facility to Marco Island. We have been looking forward to the outstanding provision of health care it will provide.”

According to Physicians Regional-Collier Boulevard CEO Scott Campbell, “We are honored to expand our services to the community by providing Marco Island, and vicinity, a technologically advanced and convenient new option for their health care needs. As our hospital location is just a few minutes north of Marco, the citizens of Marco Island have always played an extremely important role in our day-to-day operations as well as our vision for the future.”

Regarding plans for the facility’s potential growth, Campbell continues, “We look forward to future expansion of our services to include other medical and surgical specialties that are not currently readily available to Marco Island residents.”
