Fighting Breast Cancer with Beauty, Community

By Noelle H. Lowery

Everyone knows it takes a village to raise a child. Well, one could say it takes a community to help fight breast cancer here on Marco Island.

That’s the philosophy behind the Fifth Annual Hope Love Cure Fashion Show benefiting the American Cancer Society Marco Island Unit. “It’s about being a community player,” says Lisa Meurgue, owner of Bistro Soleil, where the event will be held on Tuesday, March 5 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. “Our family has always tried to be a community player.”

A14_1Together with Joyce and Bob McFarland, owners of Marco Island Clothing Company, Meurgue is hosting this year’s event with the help of ACS, the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce, the Calusa Garden Club, vocalist Sabrina Williams and Fox 4 news anchors Patrick Nolan and Emily Dishnow as the event emcees. Meurgue’s husband and Bistro Soleil co-owner, Chef Denis, will prepare the event menu of champagne, homemade smoked salmon, baked brie, bruschetta, quiche, salad and a tantalizing surprise for dessert.

As always, the fashion show will feature clothing, shoes and accessories available at Marco Island Clothing Company, and while cancer survivors will model the ensembles, Meurgue hints there will be a special addition this year. “If you want to know what it is, though, you will have to come to the show to find out,” she quips.

Driven by Meurgue and McFarland’s own successful battles with cancer, this community effort has been a winning combination. Between their work with the fashion show and their dedication to Relay for Life, the two women and their team have raised close to $80,000 for the Marco Island ACS. It also has allowed them to fulfill personal goals in their fight for a cure.

“It is about raising money,” says Meurgue. “But, it is also about celebrating survivorship, giving a face to cancer and raising awareness.”

The hosts expect a crowd of more than 100 at this year’s event. Tickets cost $50 and can be purchased by calling the Marco Island ACS at 239-642-8800 or by stopping by the ACS office located at 583 Tallwood #101.
