Carol Kent, a frequent Women of Faith speaker, best-selling author and a popular public speaker will present “Going Deeper with Carol Kent” at Marco Presbyterian Church’s Women’s Seminar on Jan. 11. Kent has spoken internationally in South Africa, Germany, Bulgaria, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Guatemala, Mexico and Canada.

“Carol is authentic, personable and what she teaches she lives,” said Karen Hollenbeck, MPC women’s Bible study planning team member. Hollenbeck has known Kent since she was a college student.

“Carol has walked where no parent ever plans or wants to go,” said Hollenbeck who watched as Kent lived through the experience of having a son with an impeccable record commit murder. “Carol leaned on God every moment through that awful process and found Him to be faithful.”

Kent’s son Jason, her only child, a young man who had dedicated himself to serving God and country in the U.S. Navy was convicted of first-degree murder of his wife’s first husband, the biological father of his stepdaughters. He received a life sentience without the possibility of parole.

Jason believed there were multiple instances of abuse of his stepdaughters.

“How we grieved for the family of the deceased,” wrote Kent in an email. “While we were planning a trial for first-degree murder, they were planning a funeral. There was deep sadness on all fronts.”

This was not supposed to be her story. She felt as if she had the word’s “Mother of a Murderer’ tattooed on her forehead. As a child Jason had a sunny disposition, an irrepressible smile, an adventuresome spirit, and a healthy curiosity about everything. He wasn’t perfect; yet he was president of his high school’s National Honor Society, went on mission trips with his youth group, worked with Habitat for Humanity and received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, Kent’s message is especially pertinent during these turbulent times. Her books include “When I Lay My Isaac Down: Unshakable Faith in Unthinkable Circumstances”, “Becoming a Woman of Influence”, “Between a Rock and a Grace Place: Divine Surprises in the Tight Spots of Life” and “Secret Longings of the Heart”.

The Jan. 11 seminar includes lunch; book signing and registration begins at 8 a.m. Kent’s books will also be available.

Session one is entitled “A New Kind of Normal” and explores her journey with her son. Session two: “Becoming a Woman of Influence,” looks at the seven ways Jesus modeled and taught how to pass truth onto the next generation.

The woman’s “Faithful, Abundant, and True” small group Bible study begins the following Friday. The seven-week DVD series includes three women, three generations and three topics: the seasoned teacher, Kay Arthur; the well-known teacher, Beth Moore; and the youthful, endearing teacher, Priscilla Shirer.

“It’s easy to say, God is faithful, but you may think how does that help my pain and disappointment,” said MPC’s woman’s Bible study planning team coordinator Elaine Buch. “What does God’s faithfulness look like in someone’s life? Is it real?”

Kent’s presentations always include humor as she shares stores from her own life, and then she hits you with a serious challenge. “As Carol opens her heart and pours out the rich lessons she’s learned, you will find yourself laughing one moment and crying the next,” added Hollenbeck.
