Teachers of Distinction Announced with Surprise Classroom Presentations

The Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program’s 2012-13 Teachers of Distinction were announced today in surprise classroom visits to their schools. These teachers will continue in the Golden Apple Selection process and from this group, six (6) teachers will be selected to receive a Golden Apple. “AND THE WINNERS ARE” Home Decorating Winner – the Giannone family, 151 Channel Court Business Property Decorating Winner – Nacho Mama’s (Mission Plaza) The Decorating Contest Final judging took place on December 14 by the entire committee aboard a trolley supplied by the Naples Transportation and Tours Company. Calusa Garden Club Holds Christmas Party

On Monday, December 10, Marco Island’s Calusa Garden Club held its annual Christmas party at the Mirage. Prior to the party a short business meeting was held. Two new members, Marsha Riss and Kathy Hershberger, were inducted into the club. The meeting was followed by Sandy Wallen’s program, “Holiday Designs,” which featured table decorations and helpful hints. Dale DeFeo presented a slide show of White House Christmas decorations. Bundles for Christmas

Bedtime Bundles joined forces with congregants from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Sunday, December 9, 2013, to distribute 62 bundles to children at RCMA (Redlands Christian Migrant Association) located in East Naples, on 6L Farm Road. The children and their parents were treated to a Christmas party sponsored by St. Mark’s. We were able to enhance their day by giving each child a bundle, as well as a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart. Their parents were encouraged to help themselves to extra sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks & underwear. “Florida’s Got the Blues”

The Marco Island Historical Museum will open “Florida’s Got the Blues”, a traveling exhibition from the Museum of Florida History on January 2, 2013 with a wine and cheese reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Come celebrate “Florida’s Got the Blues” with live blues music from “Little Eddie” of “Little Eddie and the Fat Fingers”. Marco Island’s Big Flag Fly’s Again

  At the City Council meeting today, following Councils approval of Phase II construction plans to enhance Veteran’s Park, Big Flag Committee Chairman, Dave Rice announced to the audience that in honor of the veteran’s at today’s meeting that the Big Flag at the Jolley Bridge is again flying. Noted Author Tom F. Dodd

Noted Author Tom F. Dodd recently paid a visit to the Greater Marco Family YMCA Pre-School room of Miss Kelly O’ Connor. Dodd read his book which he co-authored with Pamela Schmidt titled” The Adventures of Monty, The Kelped Crusader” to the class of 4 and 5 year old children. Dodd stated the reasons he likes to read to children is that he wants the children to know he cares about them and the importance of listening to their parents. The book is available at Read More »

On Wednesday, December 19, Governor Rick Scott appealed the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s denial of disaster assistance to seven Florida counties due to the impacts Hurricane Sandy, which caused more than $44.9 million of damage to infrastructure and beaches. Governor Scott requested Public Assistance on November 1, for Brevard, Broward, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. “Hurricane Sandy had a tremendous impact on the economy and communities along Florida’s East Coast.
