“Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” is an award-winning University Series coming to the Everglades area for the first time this October. Avid female anglers will settle in at the Port of the Islands Everglades Adventure Resort for a weekend of education, hands-on fishing activities, habitat conservation and local recreation.
Founded by Betty Bauman in 1997, the Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing University (LLGF) boasts 7,000 female graduates. LLGF is a national organization dedicated to attracting more women to sport fishing and to promoting conservation, responsible angling and emphasizing mentorship between novice and experienced members. The organization has earned rave reviews from national media including “Inside Edition,” CBS’ “The Early Show,” NBC’s “Nightly News,” “Good Morning America,” “Outdoor Life Network,” USA Today, the “Wall Street Journal” and “Southern Living.” From October 12th through the 14th, women will have a chance to experience the fabulous fishing out of the Port of the Islands in a structured setting.
With support from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) through the Sport Fish Restoration Program, women will travel from several states for this exciting weekend in the 10,000 Islands. FWC will educate University participants on the importance of marine conservation and demonstrate hook removal, release techniques and more. The University provides an opportunity for the ladies to use their newly acquired skills to fish inshore or nearby offshore on their choice of a group boat, back country boat or kayak fishing. The age for participants includes teen females age 16 and up, when accompanied by an adult female.
The university decided to host the event in the 10,000 islands based on feedback from their 7,000 graduates. “This is a great ‘out-there’ fishing adventure, where women can learn and go fishing in an amazing area they might not visit on their own,” comments Betty Bauman.
“We’re excited to host such an outstanding event,” adds Deana Paul, General Manager with Port of the Islands Everglades Adventure Resort, located at 25000 Tamiami Trail East. “Because of its unique position at the headwaters of the Ten Thousand Islands and the Gulf of Mexico, anglers from all over have chosen Port of the Islands Resort as their preferred destination for their fishing tours and recreational events. We pride ourselves on being able to exceed the needs of this very diverse population.”
The tropical vacation destination, located at the doorstep of the Florida Everglades resort, will be offering guidance for local activities when guests arrive on Friday, October 12. Swamp buggy rides, airboat tours, sunset cruises and dining in Everglades City are some of the local attractions that this area has to offer.
Beginning on Saturday, October 13, the LLGF seminar dubbed the “No-Yelling School of Fishing” will offer classroom presentations on back country/inshore, offshore, bottom, fly and the newly-added kayak fishing. Named speakers are Heather Sneed /FWC and Captains Kevin Merritt, Jon Fetter, Will Geraghty, Roan Zumfelde and Rick Karnes. Skills such as releasing, conservation, knot tying, bait rigging, spin and net casting, gaffing grapefruits, trailer backing, boat handling, fish fighting techniques and more will be available for hands-on practice. A party with a silent auction will take place in the evening.
On Sunday, ladies will embark on their chosen fishing adventure from boats or kayaks out of Everglades City, followed by fish filleting.
University registration starts at only $89 and includes instruction, use of equipment, hands-on training, networking reception and fundraisers, certain meals, goody bags and more.
