Physicians Regional Healthcare Systems’ parent company, Naples-based Health Management Associates (HMA), recently donated $10,000 to both Mike Davis Elementary School in Naples and Lake Trafford Elementary School in Immokalee.
Each school ultimately chooses how best to use the money, however, Mike Davis Elementary Principal Melanie Fike has shared plans to help fund the school’s computer-based Ticket to Read program. For his part, Lake Trafford Elementary School Principal Brian Castellani has several initiatives in the works including the purchase of new PE equipment, positive behavior incentives, and grade-level performances to showcase student talent.
Both donations are a part of Health Management Associates’ company-wide initiative, Getting2Great (G2G). G2G builds a stronger, more cohesive culture for Health Management’s team of associates, physicians, caregivers, and leaders with the overarching goal of giving back to the community. To date in 2012, HMA and Physicians Regional Healthcare System have donated more than $500,000 to various local humanitarian causes.
With their conveniently located hospital just north of Marco on Collier Boulevard, Physicians Regional represents a major entity in the local area. They have also announced plans to open a Walk-In Clinic on Marco at the corner of San Marco and Barfield no later than January 2013.
Health Management Associates CEO Gary Newsome personally presented checks to the principals, staff, and students at both schools. A native of Southwest Virginia’s Appalachian region, Newsome has witnessed poverty’s downside as well as philanthropy’s upside all of his life. “I have seen similar home-life challenges first hand. It’s so important we attempt to provide some of what these students otherwise may not have. Children also represent the future of health care as they will become our doctors, nurses, and clinicians.”
According to Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala, “I am thrilled that Health Management Associates has reached out to help these young people have a more positive and productive educational experience. Enough cannot be said to compliment those businesses who step up to provide for our children. That being said, I am sure HMA joins me in urging other businesses to follow their example.”
