A small girl slurped on her thumb as 12 Cub Scouts of Den 6, Boy Scout Troop 234 gathered on Thursday night at the Wesley United Methodist Church. The wee lassie and a number of young girls were enjoying the side room as their brothers met under the direction of Jim and Linda Chute.
It was a kickoff meeting celebrating the local cub scouts’ First Annual Cake Bake. One dozen newly iced cakes rested comfortably in the church’s kitchen thanks to the efforts of various mothers and the assistance of their sons – the icers. The cakes looked luscious. They ranged from fairly simple thick chocolate to more elaborate popcorn coated coverings and everything in-between.
Sandi Riedemann, executive Director of the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce and Shirley English, Executive Director of the Marco Island Association of Realtors, served as judges of the cakes. The Cubs were all proclaimed winners with each one receiving a suitable certificate. Unlike the Chicago Cubs these Cubs were all winners!
In addition to the contest the Cubs learned how to recite their oath and the Pledge of Allegiance. Four Cubs performed the presentation of colors and led the Pledge. It was a fitting beginning to a new season of scouting.
