Carla Bottalla R.N., BSN was the featured speaker at the September Newcomers luncheon and focused her presentation on the blending of the Art and Science of health and healing. A graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, Carla is also a certified Personal Trainer with the American Council on Exercise and a certified Zen Yoga instructor.
Recognizing the importance of maintaining a balance between the physical, intellectual (mind), emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being Carla reflected on how these aspects are interrelated and affect our health and healing both in obvious as well as subtle ways. For example, if an emotional event arises stimulating the amygdale area in the brain, the brains central command center which coordinates our actions, thoughts and ability to learn and focus will be affected. Whether those emotional responses are considered positive (joy, happiness, contentment) or negative (anger, frustration, sadness) the body responds with chemical changes.
Keeping the ‘stress’ response hormones within the appropriate zone for optimal health was demonstrated by Carla thru various breathing exercises. These directly affect chemical release thus affecting emotional and mental reactions and responses keeping the body in equilibrium. A brief demonstration of the ancient Chinese healing art of Qi Gong ( see photos) was also shared with the group.
Carla works at Marco Fitness Club as a trainer, the YMCA as a group fitness and QiGong instructor and conducts private and group yoga at Peaceful Escapes Studio. All are on Marco Island. She can be reached at 239-642-4647.
