An intimate group of twelve (including three new members) convened for the Marco Island Writers on July 11, 2012. After a brief business meeting, everyone had an opportunity to get to know each other a little better. The creative juices began flowing with some Flash Fiction where everyone had a chance to share. Ever try it? In this case, a picture of a man standing in the sand at night holding a lantern was the theme. What kind of story could you create in only fifteen minutes? It was exciting to see so many different ideas that surfaced from the same picture. Stories included everything from men hunting for lost wedding rings to murder to the “turtle man” counting eggs in the sand.
During the second hour, some members shared their WIP (work in progress) and the group gave informative feedback. Members are encouraged to bring in their future WIP; memoirs, novels, short stories and poetry to share for critique and encouragement before “putting it out there” to agents and/or publishers.
Speakers and workshops will resume in the fall when more members have returned to our beautiful island.
Next month’s meeting will be focusing on helping each other with query letters and proposals as well as giving our feedback on WIP. If you would like to attend Marco Island Writers meet at the Fifth Third Bank on Elkcam Circle next to the Post Office on the 2nd Wednesday of every month. Donations are voluntary at this time and there is a 50/50 raffle for half the cash and a door prize. Doors open at 6:00 PM for signing in and socializing. Meetings begin at 6:30 and adjourn by 8:30 PM.
