Donna Fiala [email protected] Thanksgiving is such a wonderful, loving time of the year. It is the busiest season of all for the airlines, according to their ticket agents, and you could tell by the crowds of people heading to the airport at 5:00 in the morning!! How great that families want to be together to celebrate Thanksgiving! Hopefully each of you was able to be with family for this special holiday, and give hugs and kisses to your loved ones. My family mostly lives right here, but on this particular Thanksgiving all family members came to town and were pulling ... Read More »

A THANK YOU LETTER TO MIKE MINOZZI
I would like to take this moment to thank you, Mike Minozzi, for your passion, vision and persistence in giving the people of Marco Island this beautiful and safe second span to our bridge. I watched you over the years work so diligently, attending meetings and writing reports on why we should have this second span. I would see you sometimes way after midnight sitting at your computer making notes and deciding who to call. You never gave up even when there was adversity at your door step. You knew in your heart that a second span to our bridge ... Read More »
OH, SWEET, SWEET BUREAUCRACY
By Monte Lazarus [email protected] Several weeks ago, ON A Friday, I had the great, good fortune to wander down to a nameless facility located approximately across the street from City Hall. It’s a formidable place where folks sit for long stretches awaiting their turns. Luckily I was there only to pick up a kit for a test prescribed by one of my myriad doctors. My good luck turned sour almost immediately. When I reached the bullet proof window after lurching through about a dozen patient patients who were absorbed in last year’s magazines, I told the guardian that I was simply ... Read More »
Lights on your Dash Like Lights on Your Tree
By Tim Gorman & Keith Pershing [email protected] It is common for us to have customers stop in with a question regarding a light on the dashboard. Sometimes it is the TPMS (as we discussed in our last article), but other times it’s something else. Cars today have all kinds of computer components that easily trigger lights. We’re here to help you determine the lights and turn them out. In our last article we talked about the TPMS light. It appears on your dashboard and can drive you “mental” as Keith likes to say. This light is attached to your tire ... Read More »
How Old is Old?
By Richard Alan [email protected] In any given week, I look at a lot of diamonds, lots and lots of diamonds. I examine them for security in their settings, which includes prong wear and tear. I examine them for damage to the diamond itself. Contrary to public belief diamonds are not unbreakable and can be chipped or severely damaged if proper care is not practiced. Those folks who believe a diamond is indestructible have been reading too many Marvel Superman comics. I also inspect to identify questionable white stones that have been found in recently deceased Aunt Mary’s jewelry box. I ... Read More »
Orion Looms Large in the East
By Mike P. Usher [email protected] Tonight, Orion the Hunter, rises above the eastern haze in the middle evening; kneeling upon Lepus, the hare and facing Taurus, the Bull with shield and club. Probably Orion is the most easily recognized constellation in the sky after the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and easily visible in almost every inhabited spot on Earth. It is difficult to see in Antarctica as the Sun is above the horizon when Orion is at its highest. On Marco, it will rise very high in the sky until parts of it are almost overhead affording us an excellent ... Read More »

Reminder from the Marco Island Police Department
The Marco Island Police Department would like to remind our boating neighbors to be pro-active in the prevention of the theft of fuel and other items from their boats. There are several commercially produced devices that will deter or slow thieves from stealing fuel, including locking gas caps and anti-siphon devices. While more complex and expensive, some boaters have multiple fuel fittings, with the fake or faux fittings readily visible and the real fitting hidden from view. Finally, the bad guys can’t take what isn’t there. Mariners by nature like to be prepared and many like to have their vessel’s ... Read More »

Learn about the Monroe Station & the Trail
When the Tamiami Trail was completed across the Everglades in 1928, Barron Collier set up six patrol stations along the road to help motorists. One of these historic buildings is Monroe Station, once a popular wayside stop in the desolate Big Cypress east of Ochopee. It became a popular meeting place for hunters who still leave their trucks there when negotiating the Loop Road on swamp buggies. The building has been closed and boarded up for many years but it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can hear about the history of Monroe Station, the gladesman culture that favored it, ... Read More »
