COASTAL COMMENTS

Donna Fiala By the time you are holding this copy of the Coastal Breeze, we will be congratulating a most happy couple: Mr. & Mrs. Dick Shanahan! This marvelous occasion will take place and be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 21st, and we are just delighted to see the joy on their faces as they start a new life together! With all these two wonderful people do for the Island and Islanders, I’m surprised they had time for a wedding, but I can tell you this……………they didn’t have time for a Honeymoon. IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?

By Monte Lazarus I’ve now reached the Age of the Physician, where every move is monitored, and your waking hours are spent being poked, prodded and provoked by doctors desperately trying to pay off their medical school loans. According to my records I have seen every “ist” in Collier County and elsewhere, beginning with anesthesiologist and ending with zygapophysic (which may not exist, although I honestly believe I visited one). Next week I’m graduating from “ists” to “”ians”. My first will be a veterinarian, just in case someone missed something. The entire process includes yielding gallons of blood to the ... Read More »

PEE WEE’s blast past First Baptist in final game

The youngest Eagles football team won this past Saturday by scoring a victory over First Baptist. While each team member was important, several made this their game of the season. When the Eagles were already up by 12 points at half time, coaches reminded the team that they still had another half to play and they needed to stay focused to keep the lead. Cooper Nettles was added to the defense this week and it was a move that proved a game changer, Cooper intercepted 2 passes with one being returned for a pick 6 and got several tackles. QB ... SMALLWOOD STORE REOPENS

Patricia Huff On Sunday morning, October 16, my husband and I bicycled to Chokoloskee and followed a rough sandy road to the Smallwood Store & Museum. Although it was just after ten in the morning, many visitors from outside Florida and from Europe were walking around taking photos and admiring the Museum artifacts indoors.  They were greeted by Alice Morrow from behind the counter.  She, as well as the other employees, has been out of work since April. The tourists had no idea that the road had been closed for six months; they were just visiting south Florida and had ... Read More »

Let’s talk TPMS

Tim Gorman & Keith Pershing  In last month’s article we discussed (link) what to do to wake up your dead car! As we mentioned, it’s important to check your tire pressures and make sure they are in safe condition (tread depth aside.) One indicator for proper tire pressures is your TPMS sensor. Keith says, “Tire Post Mental Syndrome monitor.” Tim wisely retorts with a smile, “Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor, TPMS.” “Yes,” says Keith, “But the light on the dash makes me mental!” So, what is so important about this special monitor? The light on the dash of a car is ... Read More »

Prevent Cancer

Crystal Manjarres  Q. What are some effective ways to prevent cancer?  A. One of the most preventable ways to avoid cancer is avoid cigarette smoke. Do not smoke, do not inhale the smoke of those who do, and if you currently smoke—stop immediately. Smoking easily tops the list of the most preventable cancers, and for good reason—you are literally signing your death sentence with each drag you take; true, some people smoke and do not get cancer, but do you really want to play Russian Roulette with the big C? If you currently smoke, take action now to stop, and if ... Read More »
