Operation Christmas Child—The Shoebox project
Plans are underway at four Marco churches to be a part of world’s largest Christmas project, Operation Christmas Child (OCC). OCC is the international holiday outreach of Samaritan’s Purse. Last year shoeboxes filled with small toys, school supplies, shoes and clothing were sent via plane, cargo ship, truck, bus, train, helicopter, boat, dog sled, mule and elephant to 8.8 million children in more than 130 countries. For many of these children, the shoebox gift will be the first gift they have ever received.
Information on OCC and how to pack and prepare your box may be found at The Family Church, 1450 Winterberry Drive; Marco Presbyterian Church, 875 West Elkcam Circle; New Life Community Church of God, 590 Elkcam Circle and Wesley United Methodist Church, 350 S. Barfield Drive; at samaritanspurse.org or by calling (800) 353-5949.
Participates may also pick up empty shoeboxes in the narthex of Marco Presbyterian Church. The gift filled shoeboxes may be dropped at any of the four churches from Nov. 14 to 20. A donation of $7 is requested for each shoebox to help cover shipping and other project costs. Please no war related items, liquids or perishables.
Donors may also track their box to the destination country where it will be hand-delivered to a child. To register shoebox gifts and find out to which country they are delivered use the EZ Give donation form found at the Samaritans Purse Web site.
This is the eighth year that Marco Presbyterian Church has served as organizer and the collection site for the Marco area. The goal for Marco Island is 700 boxes.
