HARBOR FEVER

By Frances Diebler Harbor Fever, we all get it and we all have to learn how to deal with it. First of all, I should explain just what is, “Harbor Fever”. Simply stated, Harbor Fever is a mental disease all cruisers get from time to time especially if they are in a fully equipped safe harbor with many other boats, cruisers, provision stores, and all the amenities necessary to provide you with a comfortable life. But, alas, there comes a time when you have to move on if you want to continue on your journey. I speak only for myself, ... Read More »

Q&A with Simba

This column is the opinion of a 3 year old African Grey Parrot named “Simba” who has an extremely high intelligence level. While he does not possess a degree from any college or university, he does have a strong opinion of himself and feels that he is the best candidate to answer the complex questions of today’s discerning pets…and the humans they own… Dear Simba, I am honored to live across the street from you in a small burrow in an empty lot with my mom and dad and my 2 other brothers (or rather I think they’re brothers). I ... Read More »

EATING HEALTHY

By Crystal Manjarres Q. What are some important nutrients I should be including in my diet? A. According to the USDA, Americans are lacking in seven essential nutrients: potassium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, vitamin C, and fiber. Potassium has been shown to decrease blood pressure naturally, in addition to enhancing fertility, as well as muscle and nerve function. Potassium is readily available in many foods such as: bananas, potatoes, avocados, apricots, walnuts, peanuts, strawberries, oranges, broccoli, tomatoes and squash, just to name a few. My personal favorite way to consume potassium is pure coconut water- it has double ... Read More »

The Summer Milky Way

By Mike P. Usher Tonight the Summer Triangle is above the horizon again after its winter absence. The bright trio of Altair, Deneb and Vega lies embedded in the summer Milky Way. Except for the previously mentioned three, there are few bright stars in this region, but there are literally millions of dimmer ones. Scan with your binoculars from Deneb leftwards towards Sagittarius – innumerable stars will be revealed. Even more may be seen if you wait a couple of days for the too bright Moon to get out of the way. On the chart you will see a number ... Read More »

Donation to ACS leads to unique airplane ride

By Natalie Strom Last February the Greater Marco Island Unit of the American Cancer Society held their annual Hope Ball at the new Marco Island Historical Museum. This black-tie affair consisted of a silent auction which raised money for R.O.C.K.  Reaching Out to Cancer Kids is a portion of the ACS which focuses on providing special opportunities to children with cancer and their families. The event, which raised over $125,000 for R.O.C.K. would not have been nearly as successful without the donations to the silent auction.  Some of these auction items included tickets to “Dancing with the Stars,” tickets to ... The origin of local place names

By Craig Woodward A few issues back I wrote an article about a former settlement known as “Grocery Place,” now located in Collier Seminole State Park, and pondered about how this name came to be given to such a remote location considering it was never a place to get groceries! As it turns out, persistence paid off, as a series of four articles written in January of 1927 for The Koreshan Unity’s newspaper “The American Eagle,” published in Estero, provided the answer: Grocery and Sugar Bays, at the entrance to Palm River, were “named by a mishap to the supplies of ...
