He’s wild, he’s brash, he’s witty, he is Roderick George Toombs, better known as Rowdy Roddy Piper, and he is coming to the Off the Hook Comedy Club here on Marco Island. Piper, the often played villain and known for his wearing of kilts and playing the bagpipes in and out of the ring brings his outrageous personality and numerous stories of his wrestling background for a series of six appearances at Capt. Brien’s located on South Collier Blvd in the Marco Walk Plaza.
Piper was born in Saskatoon and raised in Winnipeg. He gravitated to sports and is a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion and holds a black belt in Judo, all this before he made his pro wrestling debut in 1973 at the age of 19.
Piper worked for the American Wrestling Alliance based in Kansas City until 1975 and then switched to the National Wrestling Alliance, where he perfected his villain, bad guy image and wrestled in the California area until 1978 when he switched to the Pacific Northwest Territory where he won the Tag Team and Heavyweight Championships. In 1980 Piper switched to the Mid Atlantic Region and also Jim Crockett Promotion which led him right to Vince McMahon, the WWF (World Wrestling Federation) and world wide notoriety as the person everybody loved to hate. Piper became known as one who feuded with everyone from Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan and Mr.T
Piper also was involved with the many Wrestlemania Specials during the 80, 90’, and lasted until 2003 when the WWF was sold to World Wide Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) where Piper continued his wrestling career and the famous Piper’s Pit TV segments. Just prior to this saw the release of Piper’s Autobiography called “In the Pit with Piper: Roddy Gets Rowdy.”
In 2005, Piper was inducted in the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame. From 2007 to today, Piper still makes appearances in Wrestlemania, Cyber Sunday Wrestling and WWE Raw. Piper has a varied history in TV and movies and has appeared in such programs as Saturday Night Live, Walker, Texas Ranger, The Outer Limits, RoboCop, The Man Show, Highlander, Coldcase and the Jimmy Kimmel Show , who Piper claims started him in the profession he now follows today, that of traveling the country, making appearances at comedy clubs.
In talking to Piper, you get the idea that he just loves life, his career, family and friends and is just a happy guy who now can talk about and make light of his extended career in wrestling. Piper has also made it known that he is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Piper says of Marco Island “I can’t wait to get to Marco Island and Capt.
