Marco Island Noontime Rotary Club announced its remaining 2011 Spirit of Marco Award winners. Winners are presented with certificates in recognition of the honor bestowed. The Spirit of Marco Awards culminates in a formal awards presentation at a Gala Dinner and Silent Auction which will be held Friday, April 29th at San Marco Catholic Church.
Winners announced this week included long-time Rotarian Al Diaz. Al is well known for his years of service to local organizations. He is past president of the Rotary Club and has served on many of their fundraising committees including the Marco Island Seafood Festival that will be hosting its third annual event on March 26th & 27th. This event is joint sponsorship effort by both local Rotary Clubs and the Kiwanis club and serves as their major fundraiser for the year.
Al Diaz has also served as President of the Marco Island Charter Middle School and the Community Association Managers of Marco Island organization. He is an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and serves as the treasurer of the Naples Episcopal Deanery Outreach Committee that raises all of the operating funds for a preschool for children in the Dominican Republic.
He is also the past winner of the 2001 Marco Island Volunteer of the Year Award.
Mary Quinton also received the honors. Mary was recognized for her many years of community service as a board and committee member of several community groups that include the YMCA, Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce, Marco Area Restaurant Association, Christmas Island Style Committee, and as President of the Pinehurst Condominium Association. She is also a past graduate of the Leadership Marco program and a recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award.
Mary Quinton has contributed hundreds of hours behind the scenes to these and other organizations utilizing her special event planning skills to help them with their local fundraising efforts.
Bill Dean was presented his award in front of nearly 100 persons at a recent function at Hideaway Beach. He was recognized for chairing the Hideaway Beach Cancer Fundraising Committee for the past eight years and also for his work as a Board member of the Marco Island American Cancer Society.
Under Bill Dean’s leadership, the Hideaway Beach Cancer Committee has raised over $500,000.00 in the past eight years for the American Cancer Society, topping over $110,000.00 this year!
Also recognized were the Island Country Club and its members for their support of local causes through their charitable foundation and facilities.
The Rotary Club of Marco Island made the surprise presentation at the Island Country Club’s recent Board of Directors Meeting. President Karen Blackwell accepted the award on behalf of their Board of Directors and their members.
The Island Country Club host several fundraisers throughout the year to fund its Charitable Foundation and through the foundation, has supported to name a few, the Marco Island Healthcare Center, the Marco Island Police Foundation, the Wishing Well, along with many other organizations and causes.
Annually the Island Country Club is the major sponsor for the Christmas “Joy of Giving” event, where more than 1200 local children are provided Christmas gifts. In addition the Club also donates a turkey for each family at the event.
The Island County Club has also for many years supported many local causes by making the club and their golf course available for golf tournaments and fundraisers for local organizations.
Al Diaz, Mary Quinton, Bill Dean, and Island Country Club will share the spotlight on April 29th with Myrt Rose, who received her certificate last week.
